Harley
Development Engineer (Chassis Integration) at Singer Vehicle Design
Harley received a First-Class BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering from Bournemouth University in 2022
Why did you come to UTCN?
I came to UTCN due to the curriculum that it was offering at the time. I was also really sure that engineering was my industry of choice. The combination of BTEC and A-Levels meant I didn't have to miss out on either one which was a worry for me at the time. I felt a BTEC was crucial for my next steps into university with the assignment-based delivery and examinations.
*NB We no longer offer a BTEC in Engineering. This has now been replaced by the Level 3 C Tech Engineering. This can still be studied alongside A Levels. More details here
What did you like about UTCN?
I enjoyed the professional approach to the sixth form, and the opportunities/facilities available. The exposure to certain aspects of the industry was great as there were lots of good links to key employers.
Tell us about your current role
I'm currently working with Jaguar Land Rover in the chassis department, specialising in Braking Systems NVH and refinement. This involves "cradle-to-grave" coverage of different solutions, to issues seen in market. I also build the original simulations to test the solutions which are then fitted to vehicles and tested internationally in different climate conditions. My new role, that I start very shortly, is with Singer Vehicle Design doing more of the same sort of thing, (although focused more on braking performance) but with a closer grip on the actual project delivery and the core engineering decisions.
Why did you apply for your degree?
In terms of the industry I was pursuing for a career, having a degree was critical in unlocking the higher-end positions. I have always been a keen learner of engineering (you kind of have to be in this work!) and I was eager to arm myself with the knowledge and awareness that would assist me in later life.
What did you do in your degree?
I studied Mechanical Engineering (BEng Hons) with a placement year. My degree was assignment focused with some exams that covered all essential aspects of engineering in this field, e.g., thermodynamics, computational analysis, mechanical principles, business management and engineering mathematics. This gave me good exposure to what I have eventually settled into doing in my day-to-day life as a professional engineer. A placement year is a great opportunity to trial certain roles and areas, and I feel this benefitted me a great deal.
What advice would you give current UTCN students?
Study, of course - but do also remember that when it comes to hiring, companies hire you for what you can offer, but also the person you are. Make sure to do things that help you develop as a person both socially and professionally. Be yourself and be courageous, be open and honest!
