Students have been at the heart of a school’s 10th anniversary celebration, praising its support and encouragement.

University Technical College Norfolk (UTCN) in Norwich was founded to bridge the skills gap between education and industry.

Speaking at the celebrations, former student Beth Suckling, 21, discussed her experience at the school.

She said: “It is great to be able to give something back to this school which has given me so much.

“I think back on the 14-year-old version of me that walked in here to take a look around. I was quite shy, I wasn’t very confident.

“I think if that version of me could see what I have achieved she’d be very proud. I have come along way and that’s a lot down to the amazing support I received here.”

The Lord-Lieutenant for Norfolk Lady Dannatt was among a number of guests celebrating a school's tenth anniversary

There were also speeches from the school’s founders, chair of governors Ben Milner and Yvonne Mason. The Lord-Lieutenant for Norfolk, Lady Dannatt, was among a number of guests and praised the school for their unique education offer.

She said: “I am truly so impressed with the quality of education on offer here at UTCN. There is a lot other schools could learn from this place, specifically on career guidance.

“They are helping to train the next generation of engineers. That is good for UTCs, good for Norfolk and could for the entire UK.”

Mr Milner said: “Big thanks must go to Alex Hayes, our first headteacher, who managed to convince a whole cohort of parents and their children to join the school even when we didn’t have a building.

“I’d also like to thank all of those thousands of people who came through the door, students and staff who have made UTCN what it is today.”

Ms Mason, co-founder, added: “I really love the energy here at UTCN. It’s wonderful to work with outstanding students. They show maturity way beyond their years.”
