Skills and careers day proves inspirational
Day spurs student’s apprenticeship bid
A HUGELY successful skills and careers day organised by National Grid has inspired a student to apply for an apprenticeship.
Grid 4 Good held workshops for all year groups which included three fun activities including a team-building exercise.
There was upskilling and the interview technique STAR – situation, task, action and result – that helps to answer interview questions.
Student Kody explained:
“It is so easy to get nervous and lose your way during interviews and this acronym showed us how to structure it and so improve how you respond to questions.”
Another activity to encourage team-building saw students placed in a mock scenario of being stranded in a desert after a plane crash. Working in groups they were asked what essential items they would choose to save - provoking a fun discussion and debate. But for all the fun it was the careers advice session that really made an impact for Ben.
“The careers pathways session was really helpful – so much so that I actually applied to one of their apprenticeship schemes.”
