Charlie
Lightweight Vehicle Mechanics
Charlie is doing an apprenticeship in Lightweight Vehicle Mechanics (Level 3) at ExcelR8 Motorsport. He left UTCN after year 11.
Why did you come to UTCN?
I joined in year 10 due to the School having better opportunities and curriculum content than my previous school. I would not be where I am now had I stayed at my previous school
Why did you apply for an apprenticeship at ExcelR8 Motorsport?
I have always had a love of motorsport and I really enjoyed my work experience with them. I am very lucky to have a Championship winning motorsport team within 5 miles of home!
What do you do in your apprenticeship?
Day-to-day I do the maintenance and set up of British Touring cars. Then I attend race weekends around the UK for race set up and handling any issues that the race throws up.
What do you like about it?
I like that I get to travel around the UK, while working on a race car all at a young age
What advice would you give current UTCN students?
Perseverance and volunteering are key – I volunteered my time (at Excelr8 Motorsport) after my official work experience, going back weekends and holidays – This played a big part in being offered my apprenticeship at 16 rather than 18
