Level 3 Apprentice at Norfolk Truck and Van ltd
Morgan joinied UTCN in September 2022 to study on our T Level Engineering programme. This programme includes 315 hours (roughly 2 months) of work experience. During his placement with Norfolk Truck and Van, he impressed the team so much, that he is now a full time apprentice with them.
Why did you come to UTCN?
My decision to join UTCN Sixth Form was driven by everything they advertised about the curriculum on the T Level Engineering. With my deep interest in automotive technology, the events I attended made it clear to me that this was the right place to continue my education. From the start, I knew UTCN was the best fit for me to pursue my future in the automotive field.
What did you like about UTCN?
The most rewarding part of UTCN for me was completing the course, despite the challenges along the way. No matter how tough the exams were or how much I was pushed by the teachers, reaching the end of the course and completing everything felt amazing. On results day, opening my letter and seeing the pride on my teachers’ faces was an unforgettable moment, and it made me proud of what I had accomplished.
Why did you apply for your apprenticeship?
I applied for my apprenticeship at Norfolk Truck and Van after completing a 6-week work experience with them. I had such a fantastic time there that I knew it was the right place for me to start my career. The team is incredible, and I’m learning so much from everyone. It’s fulfilling to work on some of the largest, most technical vehicles that we all depend on daily.
What do you do in your apprenticeship?
As an apprentice at Norfolk Truck and Van, my role is to absorb as much knowledge as possible from my mentors. I work on repairing, servicing, and maintaining a variety of vehicles, primarily LGVs and HGVs, which are not cars or bikes. Additionally, I assist with MOTs, PMIs, and PDIs. I’m also involved in roadside breakdowns, which is my favorite part of the job and where I hope to focus in the future.
Right now, I'm also working on all of the brand new MAN ambulances, and we cover the entire Norfolk area and beyond. I really enjoy this work, and it makes me feel really important, as these vehicles are so crucial.
What advice would you give current UTCN students?
My advice to current UTCN students is to never give up, no matter how tough things get. You will face both good and bad moments, but how you handle the challenges will define who you become. You will be pushed to your limits, but the reward at the end is worth it. The feeling of completing the program and stepping into the workforce is unparalleled, and UTCN does an excellent job of preparing you for that. Keep giving your best effort, and remember that if you want something badly enough, you will reach it—whether it's now, at UTCN, or in the future. Stay focused, and you’ll get there.
