Why did you come to UTCN?

When I was looking at what college I wanted to go to it was very important to me that I would get the chance to learn practical hands-on skills as well as have the opportunity to challenge myself academically. UTCN ticked all the boxes for me!

What did you like about UTCN?

I really enjoyed the teaching environment and the opportunities I was given to work with industry leaders isuch as Safe STS and Ben Burgess. The facilities at UTCN are also second to none. The chances I was given to improve my practical skills was brilliant and the extracurricular activities were enjoyable. I entered the JLR in Schools challenge and we even brought back a trophy!

Why did you apply for your apprenticeship?

I completed my work experience at National Grid where I was exposed to all aspects of the company which lead me to decide that project management in the oil and gas industry was something for me!

What did you do in your degree apprenticeship?

During my apprenticeship with national grid I attended Aston University and was studying Gas Engineering. Alongside this I was able to get on site on the job training. We also completed lots of courses around asset management, project management and how to work with suppliers and contractors and how best to manage the relations.

What do you do in your job?

I am now currently a Project Engineer for Claxton engineering who specialise in drilling and decommissioning globally. I get the opportunity to travel, work onshore and offshore with people all over the world. Thanks to UTCN I had the fundamental skills imprinted on me making me ready for a challenging but rewarding career.

What advice would you give current UTCN students?

Grasp every opportunity to develop yourself, learn to take onboard criticism and learn from your mistakes. Everyone had to start somewhere, just make sure your motivated and proactive and you will succeed.
