Degree Level Apprentice Site Manager at Morgan Sindall Construction
Why did you come to UTCN?
I went to UTCN because I was interested in pursuing a career in construction and the built environment and I felt the school catered the curriculum that I was interested in.
What did you like about UTCN?
I liked that fact that the school did a combination of theory and practical learning which set me for real life experience. I also liked the fact that the school invited different companies in different industries within engineering, science, design etc and getting an insight of what different industries do and offer.
Why did you apply for your apprenticeship?
I applied for an apprenticeship because I liked that I am being exposed to real life experience and learning on the job while still getting a degree without being in debt. The difference between me and a full time university student is that I will finish my apprenticeship with 5 years of experience, a degree and debt-free whilst a full time student will have 3 years of knowledge, no experience and will be in debt
What do you do in your job?
I am an apprentice site manager at Morgan Sindall Construction. As an apprentice we do 6 rotations in different job roles (site management, site engineering, design management, planning, quantity surveying and estimating). I am currently doing a quantity surveying rotation which basically is a person who manages the money in a construction project.
What advice would you give current UTCN students?
Take advantage of any work placements. This will help you apply what you’ve learned and make you more attractive to future employers or universities. Start building relationships with industry professionals now. The connections you make during your time at UTCN can open doors for future opportunities.
