Process Engineering Apprentice at British Sugar
Why did you come to UTCN?
I chose UTCN to study engineering and to gain hands-on experience. I wanted to explore different areas of the industry and get a better understanding of potential career paths.
What did you like about UTCN?
I really enjoyed getting real-world experience and meeting professionals from different industries. It helped me understand the variety of engineering fields available and gave me a clearer idea of the direction I wanted to take.
Why did you apply for your apprenticeship?
I applied for my process engineering apprenticeship at British Sugar because I wanted to work in a hands-on, technical role where I could apply my skills in a real industrial setting.
What do you do in your apprenticeship?
In my apprenticeship, I monitor the sugar manufacturing process and make adjustments to ensure everything meets the required specifications. I also perform routine maintenance and respond to any issues to keep operations running smoothly. Alongside my hands-on work, I complete online college courses that cover chemistry and engineering principles relevant to manufacturing as well as health and safety.
What advice would you give current UTCN students?
Take advantage of every opportunity to engage with different industries and explore different career paths. Work experience and networking can help you figure out what field suits you best. Also, focus on developing practical skills alongside theory, as that will really help when transitioning into an apprenticeship or job.
