Apprentice Civil Engineering Technician at Tarmac
Why did you come to UTCN?
I came to UTCN because of the T Level Engineering course that they offer. I always wanted to do something that involved engineering and the course covered all aspects.
What did you like about UTCN?
With the amount of opportunities UTCN provides - e.g. Site visits, employer visits and work experience - you can really tell that UTCN wants you to go further and achieve what's the best for yourself. This also gets you name out in the industry
Why did you apply for your apprenticeship?
Part of my T Level course was to find work experience; I happened to have found work experience with Tarmac which was local to me. On my final week of work experience I said that I will be looking for an apprenticeship after I finish my course at UTCN. Tarmac then offered me an apprenticeship. The rest is history.
What do you do in your job?
I am in my second year of my 3-year degree apprenticeship. My duties and responsibilities are receiving new job information from our client, then creating the relevant paperwork that will cover the works. I also arrange and order plant, do traffic management, and arrange permits and subcontractors. Furthermore I brief the operatives on site and manage the progress.
What advice would you give current UTCN students?
UTCN provides many opportunities with many different employers. Ask the right questions and get your name out there. It's very common for UTCN students to find workplace/ apprenticeships because of UTCN's reputation.
