Civil Aviation Mechanic Apprentice at KLM UK Engineering

Why did you come to UTCN?

I came to UTCN for a second chance after my first attempt at getting into a sixth form failed. It became my first choice as soon as I found out about the place.

What did you like about UTCN?

Coming to UTCN was one of the best decisions I ever made. I liked that all my teachers seemed to have my best interests at heart, and how the school helped me on the right track to finding my career.

Why did you apply to be a Civil Aviation Mechanic Apprentice at KLM UK Engineering?

I applied for an apprenticeship in aircraft maintenance as I hope to one day work in the space industry. Aviation is an excellent path to space, plus it’s a great thing to fall back on should that dream not work out.

What do you do in your Apprenticeship? What do you like about it?

In my apprenticeship, I get the opportunity to learn about large aircraft in depth and perform maintenance tasks on them. This includes rectifying defects, performing routine maintenance tasks and inspecting critical areas for defects. I enjoy working with such fascinating machines.

What advice would you give current UTCN students?

My advice for students would be that it’s okay to ask for help if they’re finding sixth form difficult. Sixth Form is hard, but it won’t help to stress about it in silence. I would also advise them that no ambition is too big. Shoot for the moon, because even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.

If possible, I would like to express my thanks to three teachers. Mr Hammond for making every lesson enjoyable and one I’d always look forward to. Mr Smith for giving me some very helpful advice to get into this career and for having faith in my abilities when I didn’t. And Mr Atwell for encouraging me to do better when I wasn’t doing my best.
