BEng in Renewable Energy Engineering at Exeter University

Why did you want to come to UTCN?

I wanted to attend UTCN as UTCN is one of the only STEM focused colleges in the area offering hands on engineering learning on state of the art equipment as well as the typical A-levels required for university.

I have always had a great interest in engineering and believe to be a practical learner, so UTCN was the clear choice for me.

What did you like about UTCN?

The vast amount of hands on learning and practical projects which is not provided at other colleges allowed for great enjoyable learning.

Being able to have regular contact with a large variety of different employers allowed for me and other students to broaden our networks and understanding of our options post UTCN, this accompanied by the great network of support staff who would encourage us to increase our experience and CV/Application skills.

Being around a likeminded group of students gave me a great learning environment in which I enjoyed attending.

Why did you decide to do a BEng in Renewable Energy Engineering at Exeter University?

I decided to undertake a degree to further my knowledge in engineering, I chose Renewable Energy Engineering as it is the fastest growing industry, and the rate of new innovations and developments is extraordinarily fascinating.
Being at the front of such innovation and hopefully conducting ground-breaking work is such an exciting concept to me I am truly excited to begin work in this area of engineering.

What does your job as a Design Engineer at Inyanga Maritime involve?

Alongside my university studies I work as a design engineer at Inyanga Marine which is a subsidiary of Inyanga maritime who are a leading developer and contracting company in the offshore/tidal energy industry. The work I complete includes designing and creating CAD deliverables for clients of the company many of these skills I first developed at UTCN ultimately giving me an extra opportunity at University.

What does an typical week look like for you?

A typical week involves attending lectures, working on assignments and working part time. The amount of time spent in lectures and on campus is minimal this allows for myself to work to my own schedule, ensuring I can enjoy my life outside of work and Uni. Attending University with Exeter University on their Cornwall campus has been great as I enjoy the area so much and there is so much to do.

Any tips for students currently studying at UTCN?

My main advice would be to take full advantage of the additional opportunities UTCN offers and to fully consider the university option for your post UTCN choices.
