Special Educational Needs Coordinator & Teacher of Engineering

Where and what did you study?

I went to Huddersfield University for my Teaching Qualifications. Since then I have worked for 16 years teaching across all age ranges and aspects of Design Technology and Engineering including apprentices and NVQ workplace assessment.

Why did you want to work in a school?

Always disassembled everything from as early as 5 years old. Love everything mechanical, electrical and electronic. A passion for gadgets and any new technology. This led to a very enjoyable career in the automotive sector which was only cut short due to injury. Handing over the gained knowledge to the next generation was a natural choice

What do you like about UTCN and your job?

UTCN is able to deliver a focus on Engineering that only a few schools can in the country at KS4. We have a team of engineering teachers with knowledge that equates to over 150 years of combined experience in different sectors covering all key aspects of the engineering field. The strategy of Examinations, Employability and Experience is superb and gives the next generation the tools and equipment they need to begin their journey towards adult life

Did you have any other jobs before becoming a Teacher?

Independent Automotive Specialism with 15 years industry experience

What do you do to relax? What are your interests?

A lot of Mountain biking with regular 20 miles rides but also occasional long distance endurance riding – 120 miles in the Kielder Forest is a challenge that isn’t for the faint hearted! Ride London done several years in a row. Work on family cars and maintain these from home. All aspects of property maintenance that don’t require certification. Reading technology blogs, books and website updates. Watching science fiction and enjoying anything Marvel related with my children
