How have they done this? Simply put; by working with employers to help young people develop the skills that employers need. At last count, UTCN had the active support of more than 40 local and national companies.
Of this summer’s 68 Year 13 leavers, 33 (49%) went into apprenticeships, but university is still a popular option with 31% taking up degree courses.
Alex Hayes, Principal, University Technical College Norfolk, said:
“Some of these apprenticeships offer fabulous opportunities: we have some of our leavers starting degree-level apprenticeships and earning over £30,000 per year – not bad at 18!”
“This is because our students leave us well-prepared for the world of work and knowledgeable about the opportunities available to them in engineering, science, construction, computing and other STEM-related sectors. Employers, meanwhile, benefit from being able to link with potential new recruits, with significant numbers of UTCN students going on to join them through attractive apprenticeship opportunities.”
