The successful applicant will complete an industry recognised apprenticeship, provided by West Suffolk College in Bury St. Edmunds.

Apprenticeship: Level 3 – salary will be set above the minimum apprentice wage

ABOUT THE JOB
On completion of the programme the academic qualification earned will be at Level 3, equivalent to A Level or BTEC National Diploma. Additionally, core skills secured on completion of the course will include:
Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, its appropriate application including 2D and 3D modelling
Mechanical principles, material selection and application
Fundamentals of engineering drawing and design
Mechanical annotation including geometrical tolerances, limits and fits, surface finishes
Engineering codes and standards
Common engineering principles and the application of maths and science to engineering
Manufacturing and/or construction methods as appropriate to the specific disciplines
Welding, fasteners and fabrications
Further to the completion of the apprenticeship a structured career path will be supported to allow progression to engineer/senior engineer, and to achieve professional recognition through to Chartered Engineer status with the Engineering Council of UK.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Apprentice Design Engineer will be trained to provide expertise in CAD and Engineering Draughtsmanship. It is also anticipated that they will progress on to develop other engineering skills such as writing calculations and engineering analysis. As such, key duties and responsibilities will be:
Engineering drawings and 3D models, using Solidworks and AutoCAD.
Engineering calculations, with traditional hand calculation methods, using Mathcad Prime.
Engineering analysis, using Finite Element Analysis (ANSYS).
Engineering reports, using MS Word.
Work in a responsible manner.
Proactively engage in prescribed training (internal and external) requirements.
Work efficiently monitoring project schedules and be aware of delivery timeline.
Communicate effectively with project delivery teams, including project engineer, clients, using email, report writing or verbally.
Work collaboratively with other departments within the company, including Sales, Purchasing and Operations.
The Apprentice Design Engineer will be aware Safety Critical nature of the industry which the company operates within, and as such will:
Be aware of relevant codes and regulations, and
Work to the Internal Design Process and other Internal procedures.
RESPONSIBILITIES (SPECIFIC TO HEALTH & SAFETY)
Checking work equipment condition before use
Reporting accidents, incidents, near misses, and other safety concerns
Implementing the requirements of the AEL staff handbook
Complying with the AEL HSW policies as outlined in the staff handbook
Recycling as per the local recycling arrangements
Complying with Environmental Policy and Procedure
Reporting environmental concerns and complaints
Reporting any Environmental issues and suggesting improvements
