University Technical College Norfolk said the structure on its home on Old Hall Road, Norwich, will be the county’s first ‘vertical classroom’, which students will use to test aerodynamics.

As well as providing an innovative testing lab for the UTC students, the vertical classroom – which is yellow on the outside of the tower – also provides a striking architectural centrepiece for the building.

The UTC said it has already received more than 275 applications from potential students.

Principal Alex Hayes said: “A learning environment that is both innovative and stimulating, is key to encouraging more students to study science, technology, engineering and maths.

“These subjects are vital if we are to foster the next generation of engineers. UTC Norfolk will provide students, not only with a strong academic grounding, but also the opportunity to apply their skills through practical learning and technical challenges developed with employers in a state-of-the-art learning environment.

“As well as the vertical classroom, I think many students will be excited at the chance to get their hands on £1.3m worth of specialist engineering and scientific equipment. This is equipment which is not normally found in schools and will provide many unique learning experiences.”

Details of upcoming events and how to apply can be found on the UTC website www.utcn.org.uk
